Curfew imposed on Otukpo as Okada riders killed innocent man over alleged theft

Curfew has been imposed on Otukpo town in Benue State as Okada riders (commercial motorcyclists) killed a man they suspected of stealing a bike belonging to one of their colleagues who was killed in the process. NEWISSUES learned the suspect was taken to the police but Okada riders stormed the police station around GRA Otukpo and forced the police to handover the suspect who was beaten and set on fire alive.

After killing the suspect, it was later learned he was innocent. Family and friends of the deceased suspect stormed the town and started burning down vehicles and bikes in protest.

Reporting from Benue, Jerome Orinya wrote, “Four days back, an Okada man was gunned down and his bike taken away at the early hours of the morning around 6am, which is a repeat of frequent event. For that reasons, a boy whom was alleged to be part of those that killed the Okada boy was burnt alive by the okada members. So, it was later discovered that the boy burnt alive was innocent. The family of the boy burnt alive and friends carried out a violent protest and burning of valuable items including vehicles.”

The men of the Nigeria Army have been deployed to impose curfew on the town and relative peace has been restored.
